Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment for decompression sickness. Hyperbaric therapy involves pure oxygen in a pressurized room. Doctors prescribe the treatment for patients with air bubbles in their blood vessels or wounds and infections that will not heal due to diabetes or radiation exposure. Scuba divers often receive the treatment after a dive.
The air pressure in therapy rooms is three times the normal pressure. This allows patients to breathe more oxygen than normal. As blood carries the oxygen throughout the body, stem cells and growth factors are released to promote healing. Several countries have hyperbaric therapy facilities for use by international travelers. The most popular medical tourism destinations for this particular treatment are Bulgaria, Columbia, Greece, India, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
