A bunion is the enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe. It is usually coupled with angling of the big toe to overlap the other toes, which is hallux valgus. The swelled joint may be inflamed and painful. Bunions may be caused by wearing shoes that are too tight, by arthritis, or genetic predisposition. Less serious bunions may be treated with padding or shoe inserts.
Surgery is sometimes recommended to correct bunions. This usually involves removal of the swollen tissue, straightening of the toe by removing some bone, and realignment of the joint. People may choose to seek treatment/surgery abroad. Medical costs may be lower, and recuperation in an interesting country can be a diversion. Bunion surgery is available in over a dozen countries, worldwide.
