Rectal cancer is a serious disease, but it can be treated in several different ways. The method of treatment will be determined based on a number of factors including the stage of the disease. Surgery may include a local excision to remove the tumor or a complete resectioning of the pelvis if the disease has progressed. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may then be used to prevent the disease from spreading or to kill cells that have already spread. Targeted therapy using medication is also frequently used to destroy cancer cells locally.
Rectal cancer treatment can be costly, and many patients are now electing to have surgery or other therapies performed abroad in order to cut down on costs while still receiving top-of-the-line care from world-renowned surgeons located around the globe.
