About Dr. Samuel Easaw

Dr P.E. Samuel Easaw joined us as our Resident Consultant Neurologist in 2004 after 29 years of government service.

He graduated from the University of Singapore in 1975 and after completing district and rural postings, proceeded to do general medicine. After obtaining the MRCP (UK), he worked as a physician in the Penang and Kuantan Government Hospitals. He then trained at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, in neurology and clinical neurophysiology, from 1985 to 1987. On his return, he was posted to the Department of Neurology, Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

In 1988, he was transferred to the Penang General Hospital to start a neurology and clinical neurophysiology service for the northern region of the country. At that time, this was the only such service, either public or private, outside Kuala Lumpur. As consultant, and later senior consultant neurologist, he was an accredited trainer and has trained a number of physicians to become neurologists. Neurology is the branch of general medicine which deals with disorders of the brain, nerves and muscles. Clinical neurophysiology includes investigations like electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG), which help in the diagnosis. He was elected FRCP (Edinburgh) in 1996.

Dr Samuel has been a member of the Academic Board of the Penang Medical College since its inception and was a part-time lecturer in neurology. He was also honorary lecturer to postgraduate students at the School of Pharmacy, University Sains Malaysia, and a clinical supervisor for doctors pursuing the Master of Medicine course at University Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Malaya.

In 2010, Dr Samuel retired from full time clinical practice and joined the Penang Medical College. He now practices at Penang Adventist Hospital as a visiting consultant neurologist twice a week (half day each) and does outpatient work only.
